Notes from the Mayor: Caucus Information and Selecting Delegates

Selecting Delegates

Caucuses are held every two years. At  these meetings you will be electing precinct officers (chair, vice-chair, secretary, and treasurer) as well as county and state delegates. County delegates are expected to attend county party conventions where they help select party nominees for county offices, state representatives and state senators (unless the district boundary crosses county lines). In Highland we will be selecting candidates for State House District 27 and 56, County Commission seats A & B, County Sheriff, County Clerk, and County Attorney. State delegates are expected to attend state party conventions where they vote on party nominees for state offices. This year that includes candidates for the US House of Representatives and one of our US Senate seats.

Even though candidates can go through a signature gathering process to get to a primary, most candidates reach out to convention delegates. This gives delegates access to candidates that most people do not get. It is therefore important that those you elect to serve are willing and able to spent as much as 5 to 10 hours a week meeting with candidates, attending debates, and doing research. You should vote for delegates who are not only willing to do their homework but who will also reach out to you and share with you what they’ve learned.

Precinct chairs in the Republican party serve as both state and county delegates and vice chairs serve as county delegates. In addition to these duties the officers are also responsible to help organize the next caucus, support party candidates, attend the off-year conventions where they help select county and state party officers, and attend quarterly party meetings. Party officers are not obligated to communicate with party members throughout the year but sure I appreciate it when they do.

I have served as a precinct chair in the past. It was a great experience. I met a lot of wonderful people, who I now count as friends, and have a much better understanding of how government works.  For those that haven’t served as delegates or party officers in the past please consider it. We often complain about the actions of elected officials. Getting involved affords us the opportunity to fix problems before they happen and allows us to build a network of contacts that can help resolve issues when they inevitably arise.
